The Spanish surgeon has analyzed 100 clinical cases with an initial diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy or Sudeck’s atrophy in which he has found another underlying pathology.

The conclusions of Dr. Piñal’s study call into question the existence of Sudeck’s atrophy as such, whose diagnosis he considers erroneous or the result of ignorance of the true original pathology: incorrectly intervened fractures, neurostenalgias (continuous nerve pain) or unidentified clinical pictures of dynamic compression of the  median nerve, among other previous situations.

From this rationale, the Spanish surgeon has performed a diagnostic reassessment of 100 cases of Sudeck’s atrophy, based on whose results he has designed new surgical procedures that have resulted in the healing of the patients.

Weekend news from Antena 3 have illustrated Dr. Piñal’s research with two of the reevaluated clinical cases, those of Camelia and Ana, and echoed the presentation of Dr. Piñal’s work in Las Vegas (USA) last September, during the 74th edition of the annual congress of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).

Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best upper limb surgeons, thanks to the design and execution of new techniques and innovative clinical approaches renowned and applied on an international scale.
