The Palazzo della Cultura e dei Congressi of the Italian city of Bologna hosted last week the tenth congress of the World Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (WSRM), under the motto ‘Ad augusta per angusta’ (‘Great achievements through narrow paths’). This meeting, the most important in the world in its discipline, was attended as a speaker by the Spanish surgeon Francisco Piñal.

During four days, between Wednesday 12th and Saturday 15th June, almost 1600 surgeons from 64 countries analyzed the latest advances in reconstructive microsurgery. From the innovations in the field of maxillofacial reconstruction, to face transplantation, through brachial plexus repair, the surgical role of augmented and virtual reality or the techniques applied to the upper limb; issue in which Dr. Piñal had an extensive participation.

The Spanish surgeon addresed the most novel techniques applied to thumb reconstruction, the key aspects of the toe to hand transfer procedure and the state of the art of the microsurgery of the upper limb. Likewise, Piñal spoke on the preservation of the aesthetic function in microsurgical work and on the search for the acceptable hand as a clinical objective.

During the meeting the next edition of the WSRM congress was presented, which will take place in 2021 in the Mexican city of Cancún.
