The distinction recognizes Piñal’s medical career and his close personal and professional ties with Australia.
The Australian Hand Surgery Society (AHSS) has appointed Dr Francisco del Piñal as an honorary member. Piñal, a fellow in microsurgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital at the beginning of his career, is the first Spanish surgeon to receive this distinction, which recognizes his contributions in upper limb surgery and microsurgery, as well as his bonds with the Australian institution.
Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in fields like microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.
Among other milestones in his career, it is worth mentioning the setting of the principles of management of the acute catastrophic hand, as well as his leading role in the development of wrist arthroscopy, through procedures such as dry arthroscopy.
Piñal is the author of four pioneering books of great success and international benchmarks in the fields of wrist fracture and arthroscopy: ‘Arthroscopic Management of Distal Radius Fractures‘, ‘Arthroscopic Management of Ulnar Pain‘, ‘Atlas of Distal Radius Fractures‘ and ‘Distal Radius Fractures and carpal instabilities’, the latter also translated into Chinese.
A series of works to add to more than 500 papers and publications in national and international congresses and the leadership of a global training program, already completed by more than 300 specialists from around the world.
Currently, Francisco del Piñal leads Piñal y Asociados clinics and the unit of hand and microsurgery at Hospital Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa.
