This meeting, chaired by Dr. Francisco del Piñal, brings together 1,600 specialists upper limb from around the world

The Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos of Santander (Cantabria, Northern Spain) hosted yesterday the opening ceremony of the 16th edition of the Congress of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH 2016). Chaired by the Spanish surgeon Francisco del Piñal, this meeting will bring together -up to the next Saturday- 1,600 upper limb specialists of 65 different nationalities.

The congress, regarded as the main international medical conference on surgery of the hand, wrist and microsurgery, will have a total of 344 oral presentations and 448 posters, which will be showing the latest advances in the surgical approach on injuries and patologies of the upper limb.

The event’s scientific and medical activity began Tuesday with  the pre-course ‘What’s Cool in Wrist Surgery’, devoted to the analysis and presentation of the latest techniques in wrist surgery on global scale, with more than 500 attendees.

Dr. Del Pinal expressed his “double satisfaction”, by both the technical and participation level and the impact on his hometown, at the start of the conference: “I am delighted to have been able to organize this conference in Santander with this great response, surpassed only (and by little margin) by the edition held in Paris two years ago, although I was recommended other venues”.

“Besides the scientific weight of a medical conference of this kind – Piñal highlighted-, it is clear that these events represent an impact for the tourism and hospitality sector of the city, which has become a center of attraction of more than 2,000 people, taking that some attendees are traveling with their families”.

Santander takes over Milan in this annual event, hosted in its two previous editions by Paris and the Turkish city of Antalya.

FESSH 2016, backed by the Santander City Council, has Medartis -lead sponsor-, Acumed, AxoGen, DePuy Synthes, Groupe Lépine, Orfit, Skeletal Dynamics, Sobi and Zimmer Biomet as collaborating entities.
