The surgeon highlights his “commitment to technology and the highest care quality”. La Milagrosa

Dr Francisco del Piñal
Dr Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons.

Piñal -who joins the Hospital Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa together with his team- is an international expert in toe to hand transplants and the one that has performed the largest number of interventions of this complexity in the world, more than 500 in total. In addition, he has developed pioneering arthroscopic surgery techniques that are applied globally, such as the four-corner arthrodesis for the SLAC wrist or the dry arthroscopy.

He has more than 500 scientific articles and publications in specialized national and international meetings. He is the author of four books on arthroscopic management of distal radius fractures, ulnar pain, an atlas of wrist fractures (distal radius) and, last to date, an approach to distal radius fractures and carpal instabilities.

Dr Francisco Malagón, managing director of the Hospital Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa, has framed the incorporation of this specialist in the process of comprehensive renovation of the center, both at the level of medical teams and technological infrastructures and equipment, to which Vithas will allocate 30 million euros in the coming years.

As he explained, “Dr Piñal’s experience and prestige endow the hospital with a highly specialized service in traumatology, aligned with Vithas’s excellence in care quality”. “We are sure that it will be especially appreciated by all patients suffering from hand pathologies that, in many cases, do not find adequate solutions due to their complexity or severity,” he indicated.

For his part, Dr Piñal thanked Vithas for “the trust” in him and his team and expressed “his satisfaction and joy at being part of such an important hospital group”. “Today it is essential to commit on technology and the highest quality of care and thus be able to offer and improve the care and efficiency for our patients”, he said.

Multidisciplinary approach to traumatological pathologies

Piñal leads a team of multidisciplinary professionals specialized in orthopedic surgery and joint traumatology (shoulder, wrist, elbow, hip, knee and ankle) and of the extremities (hand and foot). In the hand surgery and microsurgery unit of the Hospital Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa, they will offer diagnosis and treatment to patients with pathologies in these areas of the body, from common to highly complex.

Some of the cases that they most frequently address are those related to hand pathologies, such as palm fractures, catastrophic hands, amputations or mutilations, osteoarthritis or arthritis; and wrist, among which are radius or scaphoid fractures, ulnar pain, wrist osteoarthritis, tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

In the same way, they will also treat common shoulder and elbow injuries that occur during sports, such as tendinitis, arthritis or adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder condition, among others.

Orthopedic surgery and joint traumatology of the hip, knee, ankle and foot is another of the areas of specialization of the unit that Dr. Piñal will head at Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa, from where diagnosis and treatment will be provided for tendinopathies, strains, dislocations, arthritis, osteoarthritis and fractures, in their different types, among other conditions.

The non-existence of Sudeck syndrome

Another of the great medical achievements of the Spanish surgeon has been the surgical treatment of complex regional pain syndrome, also called Sudeck’s disease. It is a pathology that affects the extremities of the body, causes great pain to the patient and becomes disabling. The usual symptoms are swelling, color changes in the area and inflammation, all accompanied by pain with no apparent cause. Its treatment is generally focused on the administration of drugs that aim to mitigate pain.

However, after analyzing more than 100 cases of patients diagnosed with this syndrome, the doctor determined that all of them actually suffered from other pathologies that could be approached surgically, thanks to a new diagnosis that correctly identified the cause of the pathology.

In fact, the Sudeck’s syndrome patients evaluated have been successfully treated by Dr Piñal. The conclusions of this study were reported at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Surgery of the Hand held in Las Vegas in 2019.
