The Spanish surgeon presented the latest advances in microsurgical techniques for approaching severe upper limb trauma

Dr. Francisco del PiñalDr Francisco del Piñal participated as a speaker last week in the 15th edition of the congress of the European Federation of Societies for Microsurgery (EFSM). The Spanish surgeon gave the keynote lecture “The role of microsurgery in upper limb trauma“, in which he presented the latest advances in this profile of surgical techniques (access to the full meeting program).

Dr Piñal also took part in the panel on finger surgery, in which he addressed extreme thumb reconstructions. In turn, he intervened in the thematic axis dedicated to the role of flaps in the reconstruction of the upper limb, detailing the use of adipofascial flaps as a gliding surface to avoid adhesions and stiffness.

The congress was scheduled to be held in Bucharest, but went online due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The EFSM was created in 1990 and is currently made up of the Danish, French, Romanian, Spanish, Turkish and British societies, along the German-speaking  (societies from Germany, Switzerland and Austria) and Scandinavian groups (Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland). Its main goa lis the “promotion of a high quality degree of education for their members, by permanently increasing their level of knowledge and their commitment to caring and helping the patients”.

Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in fields like  microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.

Among other milestones in his career, it is worth mentioning the setting of the principles of surgery in the acute catastrophic hand, as well as his leading role in the development of wrist arthroscopy, through procedures such as dry arthroscopy.

Currently, Francisco del Piñal leads Piñal y Asociados clinics in Madrid and Santander and the unit of hand and microsurgery at Hospital La Milagrosa in Madrid.
