Vithas launches ‘Three Fingers,’ the first episode of its podcast “Stories & Records.” It narrates in the first person how the carpenter Liviu Bacari experienced the amputation of three fingers from one hand, to which Dr. Francisco Piñal restored functionality through a toe finger implant at Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa. In this inaugural episode, 48-year-old carpenter Liviu Bacari recounts firsthand the accident that resulted in the amputation of three fingers from his hand, jeopardizing his current profession. Dr. Francisco del Piñal, head of the Hand Surgery and Microsurgery Unit at Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa, also participates, and his intervention allowed Liviu to receive three toe fingers. Six months after the complex surgery, Liviu has notably regained mobility and functionality. “Historias e Historiales” is a Vithas podcast featuring doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, along with their patients and family members. They share firsthand stories of personal and professional triumphs hidden behind medical records. The podcast explores how the battle against illness brings doctors and patients together, experiencing moments of despair and pain, as well as optimism and joy when things go well. Synopsis of ‘Three Fingers’: Liviu Bacari, a 48-year-old carpenter, lost three fingers from his left hand while cutting wood with a table saw at his home in Nuevo Baztán, east of Madrid. Through a friend of his daughter studying Medicine in Romania, he contacted and met Dr. Francisco del Piñal, head of the Hand Surgery and Microsurgery Unit at Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa, who received Liviu in his office three days after the accident. At the medical appointment, Dr. Piñal had a drawing of Liviu’s hand, photos, and all the information related to the surgical intervention that could reconstruct his hand through toe finger transplantation. The specialist proposed to operate on Liviu two days after that consultation, and the patient agreed without hesitation. The intervention was a success. Five weeks after the operation, Liviu began rehabilitation through mobility exercises. After three months, the improvements were already significant, and at six months, his hand was functional again, pending the recovery of sensitivity, which takes around a year from the surgical intervention. The production of ‘Three Fingers’ was handled by Marta Candela, communication and marketing manager at Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa; narration was done by Mónica Ramírez, communication and marketing manager at Vithas Valencia 9 de Octubre Hospital, while Paula Huerta, Vithas’ social media manager, coordinated the entire process. The first episode of the podcast is now available on Spotify and the various social media platforms of the group (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
