Clinical case: Left hand thumb amputation in work accident

Pedro M ª Martínez, Vitoria, 58, Mechanical fitter; suffered the amputation of his left hand thumb in a work accident while handling a press. He underwent an operation to transfer the ‘big toe’ to the left hand, replacing the amputated finger.

To maintain foot stability and ensure a normal mobility, the second toe (index toe) of the concerned lower limb was moved to the position occupied by the hallux (big/great toe). The procedure was a complete success, which enabled Pedro Mª Martinez to return to his job after five months of rehabilitation
