This annual meeting will take place next January in the US state of Hawaii
Dr. Piñal will become at the beginning of 2021 the first Spanish surgeon invited to give the keynote conference of the annual congress of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM). This meeting will take place in Koloa, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, from January 15 to 19 of next year.
Francisco del Piñal will speak about his clinical experience and research on complex regional pain syndrome or Sudeck’s atrophy.
Dr. Piñal does not consider Sudeck’s atrophy a pathology per se, but rather a diagnostic formula that masks an unidentified origin of the patient’s real problems, which appear after an intervention, a fracture or an infectious process, among other precedent pictures.
Thus, more than a century after its description as “acute inflammatory bone atrophy” by the German surgeon Paul Südeck, Dr Piñal and his surgical unit have already cured dozens of patients with this diagnosis, through an innovative clinical approach that, in expert hands, produces spectacular results.
Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in the fields of microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.
ASRM
The American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery was stablished in 1984 with the objective of fostering the scientific-medical advancement of microsurgery and complex reconstructions, as well as offering a forum for the formation, research and debate of the different microsurgical methods and principles.
Today, the society is made up of more than 500 members from 16 countries and continues to grow and evolve to provide a fundamental boost to the progress of reconstructive microsurgery, as a specific area of medicine.
