Under the title ‘More than microsurgery in the hand’ (‘Más que microcirugía en la mano’), Piñal underscored the surgical approach to the upper limb “as a whole”, on the basis of technical presentations and case studies from his long medical career.

Keynote conference of Dr Francisco del Piñal during the I SECPRE Online Congress.

The conference of the Spanish surgeon and microsurgeon, given last Monday, was one of the three keynote conferences of the program of the I SECPRE Online Congress, with 40 internationally renowned speakers and 400 registered physicians. During its two days, there were also 17 conference tables and 6 commented surgeries.

Dr Piñal’s intervention was presented by Dr Enrique Moledo, from the Hospital POVISA and the Instituto Gallego de Microcirugía y Cirugía Reconstructora (Galician Institute of Microsurgery and Reconstruction Surgery – IGAMI), from Vigo. As stated in the title of his conference, Piñal raised the need to consider the hand “as a whole” in the design of upper limb surgery procedures, taking into consideration for the patient’s recovery the wide range of techniques beyond microsurgery and what he called ‘beautiful operations’.

SECPRE, the Spanish Society for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (Sociedad Española de Cirugía Plástica, Reparadora y Estética), is a scientific society that groups together plastic surgery specialists who join it according to “their merits in terms of training, knowledge, experience and ethics”. It was founded in 1956, with the aim of “providing optimal quality care to patients and offering the highest levels of professionalism”.

Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in fields like  microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.

Among other milestones in his career, it is worth mentioning the setting of the principles of surgery in the acute catastrophic hand, as well as his leading role in the development of wrist arthroscopy, through procedures such as dry arthroscopy.

Currently, Francisco del Piñal leads Piñal y Asociados clinics in Madrid and Santander and the unit of hand and microsurgery at Hospital Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa.
