The conclusions of the Spanish surgeon will be published soon by the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, ‘Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’. متلازمة الألم الناحي المركب

Spanish surgeon and microsurgeon Francisco del Piñal has treated 225 patients with complex regional pain syndrome or Sudeck’s atrophy in consecutive sequence, whose pain was due to another underlying reason. A group of these have benefited from surgery based in their new diagnosis, with a 98% success rate of those operated on. These are some of the most outstanding data of the content dedicated by TVE Canal 24 horas and its territorial center in Cantabria to Piñal’s progress in his clinical and research works, which are illustrated with several specific cases.

Dr Piñal doesn’t consider complex regional pain syndrome -identified more than a century ago- a pathology per se, but rather a diagnostic formula that masks an unidentified origin of the patient’s real problems, which appear after an intervention, a fracture or an infectious process, among other precedent pictures and are, thus, treatables.

As reported in TVE newscasts, the prestigious journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), ‘Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery‘ will publish in one of its next issues the conclusions of Dr Piñal, after an exhaustive peer review process, with up to 10 reviewers of the final text.

Ponencia internacional sobre síndrome de dolor regional complejo en Las Vegas
Dr Piñal presents the international guest lecture of the 74th annual congress of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, dedicated to his work on complex regional pain syndrome (Las Vegas, USA, September 2019).

In this way, Dr Piñal’s work is incorporated into the medical literature and, thus, becomes a reference for the treatment of patients with complex regional pain syndrome or Sudeck’s atrophy throughout the world.

Among the milestones of the Spanish surgeon in his work on complex regional pain syndrome -known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy too- is also the presentation of his thesis before the plenary session of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), in September 2019 in Las Vegas.

It is a long trajectory in which Dr Piñal has treated and cured dozens of patients with this diagnosis, hopeless and condemned to live for life as chronic patients in pain units and dependent on powerful neuromodulatory and analgesic drugs, such as morphine.

Born in Santander, northern Spain, in 1960, Dr Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in fields like microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.

Among other milestones in his career, it is worth mentioning the setting of the principles of surgery in the acute catastrophic hand, as well as his leading role in the development of wrist arthroscopy, through procedures such as dry arthroscopy.

El cirujano español considera la eliminación del dolor en pacientes diagnosticados con síndrome de dolor regional complejo como su mayor reto actual. “Aunque hay pacientes con dolor -afirma- hay muy pocos que no se puedan curar”.

The Spanish surgeon considers the elimination of pain in patients diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome as his greatest current challenge. “Although there are patients with pain -he affirms- there are very few who cannot be cured.

Currently, Francisco del Piñal leads Piñal y Asociados clinics in Madrid and Santander and the unit of hand and microsurgery at Hospital La Milagrosa in Madrid.
