Eva Latorre (Tarragona), 40, presents a diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy or Sudeck’s atrophy after a carpal tunnel release intervention in her right hand: “after the intervention of Dr Piñal I’m coming back to my life again”.

The patient goes to the clinic of Piñal y Asociados in Madrid after three years polymedicated and in treatment at the Pain Unit. Among other symptoms she suffers from burning sensation, pain, tingling and severe limitations in hand and arm function, which in turn generate sleep disorders.

Dr. Piñal reevaluates the case and diagnoses a picture of neurostenalgia of the median nerve, from which he designs and executes a new surgical procedure. Just 24 hours after the intervention, the pain disappears and the patient registers a clear improvement in mobility in the upper limb.

The Spanish surgeon does not consider Sudeck’s atrophy a pathology per se, but rather a diagnostic formula that masks an unidentified origin of the patient’s real problems, which appear after an intervention, a fracture or an infectious process, among other precedent clinical contexts.
