Dr. Francisco Piñal successfully performs this minimally invasive surgical technique that allows the joint to be fully visualised.
This Thursday, the goalkeeper of the Spanish National Team and Athletic Club, Unai Simón, underwent arthroscopic surgery to operate on his right wrist. This minimally invasive technique allows a complete visualisation of the joint.
It was carried out at the Hospital Universitario La Luz in Madrid and Dr. Francisco Piñal managed to repair the scapholosemilunar ligament tear by immobilising the joints with needles.
The scapholosemilunar ligament is the one that coordinates the movements between the bones of the carpus, ‘and when it is broken, the wrist crunches because it does not work harmoniously and to avoid pain and to prevent it from evolving into osteoarthritis, it is necessary to operate’, explains Dr. Piñal.
According to this reference in hand surgery and microsurgery, Unai Simón will be discharged today, Friday, and as for recovery, the doctor says, ‘a ligament of this type takes time post-operatively, and you can be off work for between 4 and 5 months’.
