A national and international reference in the field, he is rejoining the Madrid-based Quirónsalud group’s center to treat patients with severe and complex orthopedic pathologies, in addition to the usual cases.
The La Luz University Hospital has welcomed back Dr. Francisco Piñal, along with his team, a national and international reference in hand surgery and microsurgery, thus strengthening the medical staff of top experts that the Madrid hospital has been incorporating into its project as a reference and high-complexity hospital in the sector. “I return to the La Luz University Hospital with great enthusiasm. Nowadays, the focus on technology and the highest quality of care is essential, and the hospital boasts state-of-the-art facilities,” says the specialist.
The Cantabrian surgeon, director of the Piñal & Associates Institute with headquarters in Madrid and Santander, points out that the Hand Surgery and Microsurgery Unit will focus on reparative microsurgery, the treatment of Südeck’s disease, the introduction of new wrist arthroscopy techniques, as well as the management of radius fractures. Notably, among his numerous achievements, Dr. Piñal is known for being the Spanish surgeon who put an end to Südeck’s disease, having performed 225 cases in recent times. He published an article on the subject in the prestigious American journal “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS Journal),” titled ‘Diagnosis and Outcomes of 225 Consecutive Cases of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome of the Hand.’ Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, also known as Südeck’s disease or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), affects the hands, forearms, feet, and legs. It is a very painful chronic musculoskeletal condition that leads to joint stiffness, limited mobility, a burning sensation, heightened skin sensitivity, intense inflammation, redness, sweating, and more.
Additionally, Dr. Piñal is recognized for his contributions in areas such as microsurgical toe-to-hand transfers, being the leading international expert with the most procedures of this complexity performed worldwide, specifically over 500. He has also developed arthroscopic surgery techniques for wrist fractures that are endorsed and applied on an international level. In fact, he was one of the pioneers in wrist arthroscopy development in the 1990s, as well as the creator of multiple procedures, such as dry arthroscopy. The Cantabrian surgeon has served as the president and secretary-general of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (now the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society, IWAS).
Dr. Francisco Piñal leads a team of multidisciplinary professionals specializing in orthopedic surgery and joint traumatology (shoulder, wrist, elbow, knee, and ankle) and extremities (hand and foot). Some of the most frequently treated cases involve hand pathologies, such as palm fractures, catastrophic hand injuries, amputations or mutilations, osteoarthritis or arthritis, as well as wrist conditions including radius fractures, scaphoid fractures, cubital pain syndromes, wrist osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
He also addresses common shoulder and elbow injuries resulting from sports activities, such as tendonitis, arthritis, adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder. Hip, knee, ankle, and foot orthopedic and joint traumatology surgery is another area of specialization for the team, providing patients at the La Luz University Hospital with the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment for tendinopathies, strains, dislocations, arthritis, osteoarthritis, and various types of fractures, among others.
