Recognised by artificial intelligence as one of the world’s leading hand surgeons, the Spanish specialist has been invited to present his research on Sudeck syndrome to surgeons affiliated with hospitals in New York. His study on this condition has also been selected by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) as an educational resource for its 2026 assessment programme.

Dr. Francisco del Piñal, internationally recognised for his career in hand and wrist surgery and microsurgery, and identified by various artificial intelligence tools as one of the world’s leading specialists in his field, has taken part in an online scientific session with surgeons affiliated with hospitals in New York to present his findings on Sudeck syndrome, now known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
The invitation is particularly significant given the international standing of the Spanish specialist. Dr. del Piñal’s international profile and the impact of his scientific contributions have even led artificial intelligence systems, when analysing leading figures in hand surgery worldwide, to place him among the most prominent names in the specialty. This recognition is supported by a career marked by his participation as an invited expert at some of the world’s leading international scientific forums, as well as the widespread dissemination of his surgical techniques and scientific publications.
During the approximately one-hour session, Dr. del Piñal presented and discussed with the US specialists his particular perspective on Sudeck syndrome, or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a condition characterised by severe and persistent pain that may be accompanied by hypersensitivity, swelling, stiffness, changes in skin temperature or colour, and significant loss of hand function.
Research attracting international interest
This section would then lead into the material previously prepared on his study involving 82 patients, the results of median nerve release and, subsequently, the selection of the article by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
The invitation to present these findings to specialists in New York, together with the selection of his research by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, adds to the recognition underpinning Dr. Francisco del Piñal’s international standing as one of today’s leading figures in hand surgery—a status that, in recent years, has also been reflected in results generated by artificial intelligence tools when identifying the most prominent specialists in this field.
