In the main speech, the Cantabrian surgeon presented his studies on Sudeck’s disease (also called reflex sympathetic dystrophy, or complex regional pain)

Under the title “Debunking CRPS / Sudeck /Reflex sympathetic Dystrophy”. The presentation took place at the height of the conference, the combined session of the American Societies for Surgery of the Hand, Peripheral Nerve, and Microsurgery (AASH, ASPON/ASRM).

In another session on the importance of microsurgery in bone defects and osteomyelitis, Dr. Piñal participated presenting his findings and techniques for the reconstruction of invalidating bone defects.

Sudeck’s dystrophy

Sudeck’s dystrophy, also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS 1 and 2, complex regional pain syndrome) causes acute pain in the patient with vasomotor alterations in the upper extremities such as swelling, changes in color and temperature, burning or tingling, among others. These alterations cause severe functional limitations in the hand and arm, which are often also accompanied by sleep disorders.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD is a disease that involves a disruption in the sympathetic nervous system. In this case, it is a picture of intense and chronic pain, lasting more than six months, with stiffness and color changes in the tone of the skin in the affected areas.

The nerves affected by reflex sympathetic dystrophy are those that are located on both sides of the spinal cord and are responsible for controlling some bodily functions, such as opening and closing blood vessels.
