The Basque pelota player Xabier Tolosa Abendibar, known as Tolosa, will return to competition next Friday 9 May after six months of forced absence due to a serious injury to his right wrist.

A native of Anoeta (Guipuzcoa) and born on 24 October 1995, Tolosa is a fullback in the Basque pelota handball modality. The injury, which had been unsolvable for months, was finally successfully treated by means of an arthroscopy carried out by the renowned microsurgeon Francisco Piñal, a specialist in hand surgery.

The arthroscopy technique makes it possible to identify the cause of discomfort and pain in the wrist that cannot be detected by other diagnostic tools such as MRI, electromyography or computerised axial tomography (CAT). A key advantage that, in Dr. Piñal’s case, is supported by a track record of thousands of non-invasive interventions, with an annual average of more than 250.

In addition, Dr. Piñal was the first surgeon in the world to describe and apply the dry arthroscopy technique, which improves the chances of success by eliminating the need to inject fluids into the operated area.
